The pizza at Osteria Italian Restaurant in Shrewsbury is renowned for being among the best in the area, delivering a slice of authentic Italian tradition right to diners’ tables.
This reputation is not just a result of quality ingredients but also the dedication to traditional techniques, regional flavours, and an overall dining experience that reflects Italy’s culinary heritage.
Commitment to Authentic Italian Ingredients
One of the defining qualities that makes Osteria’s pizza exceptional is its use of high-quality, authentic ingredients. The restaurant sources only the finest ingredients, many of which are imported directly from Italy to maintain the highest standards. For example, the tomatoes used in Osteria’s pizza sauce are often San Marzano tomatoes, grown in the volcanic soils near Mount Vesuvius in Italy, known for their rich, slightly sweet flavour. The mozzarella is either imported or made fresh, adding a creamy texture and depth to every bite. Fresh basil, extra-virgin olive oil, and high-quality flour also contribute to the authentic Italian flavour profile that sets Osteria’s pizza apart.
By using these premium ingredients, Osteria ensures that each pizza reflects the flavours of Italy. In Italian cuisine, simplicity is key; the focus is on letting each ingredient speak for itself. This philosophy is evident in every pizza Osteria serves. Their Margherita pizza, for instance, uses only tomatoes and mozzarella, yet it delivers a depth of flavour that simpler pizzas often lack. This is a result of Osteria’s dedication to sourcing and utilising ingredients with unparalleled quality.
Traditional Neapolitan Pizza Techniques
Osteria is committed to upholding traditional Neapolitan pizza-making techniques, which are renowned worldwide for their unique flavours and textures. Neapolitan pizza is recognised by its thin, soft centre with a slightly thicker, airy crust. Achieving this balance is a skill that requires careful attention to dough preparation, cooking temperature, and timing.
At Osteria, the pizza dough is made from scratch daily, using a simple blend of flour, water, salt, and yeast. However, the magic lies in how the dough is handled and left to rise slowly, often over 24 hours. This long fermentation process helps develop the dough’s flavour and texture, creating a crust that is both light and full of character.
Once the dough is ready, it’s hand-stretched to preserve its airy texture, which is crucial for an authentic Neapolitan pizza. The pizza is then cooked at a high temperature, often in a wood-fired oven, which allows it to bake in a matter of minutes. This rapid cooking process gives the pizza its signature charred, blistered crust, while keeping the centre soft and slightly chewy. The result is a pizza that is both flavourful and texturally unique, with a delightful contrast between the crisp outer crust and the tender, pillowy centre.
Regional Variety and Creative Options
While Osteria respects traditional pizza-making techniques, they also offer a range of pizzas that highlight the diversity of Italian regional flavours. Italy’s pizza culture varies significantly from region to region, and Osteria reflects this by providing options inspired by different parts of the country.
For example, beyond the classic Margherita, diners can enjoy a Quattro Stagioni pizza, which divides the pizza into four sections, each representing a season and featuring different toppings like artichokes, mushrooms, ham, and olives. This variety gives diners a taste of Italy’s regional diversity while keeping each pizza rooted in traditional flavours and ingredients.
Osteria also adds a touch of creativity to its menu, offering seasonal and specialty pizzas that change throughout the year. By using local, seasonal ingredients and combining them with Italian classics, Osteria creates pizzas that feel both familiar and inventive. A springtime pizza may feature fresh asparagus, while an autumn version could incorporate truffle, offering diners a uniquely flavourful experience that celebrates the best of each season.
A Dining Experience that Embraces Italian Culture
Beyond the pizza itself, the dining experience at Osteria plays a big role in what makes their pizza the best in Shrewsbury. Osteria is designed to reflect the warm, inviting atmosphere of a traditional Italian pizzeria, where food is about more than just nourishment—it’s a way to bring people together. The staff is passionate about Italian cuisine and dedicated to ensuring each guest enjoys a memorable dining experience.
At Osteria, pizza is not served as fast food but as an art form meant to be savoured and enjoyed. The restaurant’s ambiance, with its relaxed, communal feel, creates an environment that encourages diners to slow down and savour each slice. This aligns with the Italian philosophy which emphasises enjoying good food and good company.
Rave Reviews and Loyal Customer Base
Osteria’s reputation as the best pizza in Shrewsbury is solidified by the rave reviews and loyal customer base it has cultivated over the years. Locals and visitors alike praise the quality, consistency, and authenticity of Osteria’s pizza, often noting that it reminds them of the pizzas they enjoyed in Italy. Our new favourite restaurant in Shrewsbury!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Osteria italian restaurant near me in Shrewsbury. We had the sharing starter which was literally overflowing with deliciousness. We couldn’t eat it all and didn’t want to fill up before the main course so accepted the offer of the rest being boxed up to take home. I enjoyed Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare with so many mussels, it was a feast! My husband had the Vibo Valentia with garlic bread. The depth of flavour of everything we ate was immense.
We kind of stumbled across Osteria and didn’t really know what to expect, but based last night’s meal and the friendly atmosphere, we’ll definitely go back! It’s well worth a visit.

An amazing restaurant, worth the hype
I have to recommend the pork belly, both the nibbles and the main are amazing! The dough balls are out of this world gone so fast that I couldn’t even snap up a photo of them.
We’ve sampled the pasta (ravioli and a carbonara that I thought I wouldn’t see outside of Italy) and the risotto (sausage) as well as the award winning pork dish.
I promise you we will be back to try the pizza.
Everything is unexpected, with twists of anise and hints of subtle and deep wine, or other components you’ve never thought of, but once you taste them you wonder why you’ve never considered them before.
Nothing is taken for granted and yet you’re given so much more than you asked for.
An unforgettable experience in Italian dining!

We just the tastiest dinner at Osteria this evening! I have not eaten such rich and tasty food in a very long time. Up there with the best food in Shrewsbury, I wouldn’t change a thing. The service was amazing, it was an authentic Italian experience and the timings and food were 5* for a very reasonable price. We felt so well looked after and had a fantastic evening. We will be back for more!

Delicious pasta carbonara
Had a lovely anniversary meal here. The waiter was very attentive and looked after us well. After reading the reviews we had to try the ‘Carbonara’. We weren’t disappointed, it was delicious, very delicate and very different in a good way. I encourage you to try it. The lasagne was also excellent as was the tiramisu. The Tuscan bean salad was a highlight. Definitely will be our ‘go to’ restaurant next time we’re in Shrewsbury.
